Data literacy

An essential for decision making and artificial intelligence.

Description of the course

Too often we have to use poorly constructed, disparate, inconsistent and sometimes incomplete data.

Without a systematic way to start and keep data clean, bad data will happen.” –
Donato Diorio, fondateur et président-directeur général de DataZ

Knowing how to manipulate the data that your organisation holds is a considerable asset to better understand the environment in which it evolves and better anticipate the future.

To make better business decisions, data is indeed crucial. But you need to know how to clean it up, arrange it and present it in a visual format that "speaks".

This course will provide you with concrete ways to fully exploit the potential of your data, to make it more meaningful and to use it to support your decisions. You will also learn about artificial intelligence concepts and the importance of relying on the right data in the right quantities.

This course is one of the six required to obtain the Digital Strategist certification. However, it can be taken on an à la carte basis.

Prerequisite: Relevant workplace experience and basic knowledge of Lean and continuous improvement tools

For online training, meeting invitations will be sent to you 48 hours in advance and will contain the web links to access the training. Make sure you have the necessary equipment to be able to hear and communicate with the trainer! The material will be sent to you as a link or PDF file to your email address.

General objective

This course will teach you how to combine and manipulate multiple data sources properly and then include them in a dashboard.

It will also enable you to create the winning conditions for the next step in your digital transformation: the use of artificial intelligence.

Who is this training for?

This training is aimed at leaders, managers, team leaders, supervisors, project managers, change agents, Lean agents, leaders or quality and continuous improvement specialists.

Benefits

At the end of this training, you will have the tools to :

  • to obtain clearer data;
  • rely on reliable data;
  • improve decision-making;
  • pave the way for the implementation of artificial intelligence in your organisation.

Details of the course

The training will be given with the Microsoft PowerBI Desktop tool. It can be downloaded and used free of charge (although Microsoft may revise this policy in 2021). Many of the features covered in the training are also available in Microsoft Excel.

Importing and manipulating data with Power Query

We will explore the data manipulation features of Power Query, available in both Microsoft PowerBI and Microsoft Excel. With this tool, we will be able to create transformation flows that can then be applied as many times as necessary to update the data.

Create relational models to arrange your data

Microsoft PowerBI and Microsoft Excel have tools for defining relational data models, which are rules that relate multiple data sources. We will explain and apply the concepts of cardinality, primary keys and filter direction.

Create a simple dashboard to leverage your work

Once we have cleaned and linked our data, we will see how to create a simple dashboard that can be refreshed as new data becomes available. We will also look at how to create interactive elements in dashboards and tips for maximising their visual effectiveness.

Exploring the possibilities associated with artificial intelligence

Microsoft PowerBI already includes some features related to artificial intelligence in 2020. More will probably be added in 2021. We will see which ones are of most interest in this crowded field.
